Jailbreak app developer Sonny Dickson has discovered a new feature ‘HQ 3G Playback’ which is currently disabled in latest stock iOS 5 and iOS 5.0.1 firmware. The feature lets you playback high definition HD YouTube video over 3G on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 5+ firmware without having to jailbreak your device.
By just altering a preferences file in the heart of your device, HD Video Playback mode can be switched on which will work on 3G. Here’s how to enable it.
Step 1: Download iBackupBot utility from here for Mac or Windows. Trial version will also work.
Step 2: Take the back of your iPhone via iTunes. Don’t ask me how to take the backup. If you don’t know, follow Apple support instructions.
Step 3: Launch iBackupBot utility and locate the backup that you just created via iTunes.
Step 4: Open the backup to have access to a list of system files.
Step 5: Scroll through the list and Locate the file Library/Preferences/com.apple.youtubeframework.plist
Step 6: Double-click to open the file. If you are prompted with a registration window for iBackupBot, press Cancel and then you’re good to go.
Step 7: In order to activate HD YouTube video playback over 3G, you need to add a key to this .plist file. Just open the file and add a key ‘HD3G’ and set the string to ‘True. To do so, simply add following lines of code.
Step 8: Save the file and restore your iPhone with the modified iTunes backup right via iBackupBot.
Step 9: Reboot your iPhone. The HQ 3G Playback option is now added to the settings of YouTube app.
